Biography
Prof. Ryszard Żarów, PhD, is a distinguished Polish anthropologist and physical education specialist. He holds a professorial position at the Department of Anthropology, University School of Physical Education in Kraków (Akademia Wychowania Fizycznego im. Bronisława Czecha w Krakowie) and is also affiliated with the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Applied Sciences in Tarnów.
Prof. Żarów’s research focuses on somatic growth, physical fitness, and lifestyle patterns across various Polish populations. A recent highlight includes co-authoring a comprehensive longitudinal study published in the American Journal of Human Biology, which analyzed changes in body structure and physical fitness among Kraków residents aged 32–34 and 50–52 between 2004 and 2022. Further, he contributed to a 2024 study examining the physical activity and lifestyle of female students at Tarnów’s Faculty of Health Sciences, exploring factors like exercise frequency and health behaviors.
His academic output spans over 20 peer-reviewed publications and includes collaborative investigations into topics such as adolescent growth, physical fitness in individuals with intellectual disabilities, and adult body composition. He has a notable presence on ResearchGate, where he is recognized as a verified professor with more than 250 citations and over 5,800 reads.
In addition to his research, Prof. Żarów actively engages in teaching and mentorship. He participates in multidisciplinary projects across Kraków and Tarnów, integrating anthropological theory with applied health sciences. His unique cross-institution collaboration reinforces his commitment to advancing knowledge on how lifestyle and physical activity influence human development throughout life.
Research Interest
Prof. Ryszard Żarów’s research interests lie at the intersection of physical anthropology, human biology, and public health. He focuses extensively on somatic development, physical fitness, and body composition across different age groups, particularly within Polish populations. His studies explore the secular trends in human growth, the effects of physical activity and lifestyle on health parameters, and the biological adaptation of individuals to environmental and social conditions. Prof. Żarów has a keen interest in longitudinal assessments, evaluating generational changes in physical structure and fitness levels over time. He also investigates motor skills and anthropometric profiles in children, adolescents, and adults, including populations with intellectual disabilities. His research aims to inform educational programs, preventive healthcare strategies, and fitness interventions based on anthropological evidence. Additionally, he collaborates across disciplines in both academic and applied health science environments, contributing valuable insights into population health, human development, and physical education methodologies.
Open Access Policy refers to a set of principles and guidelines aimed at providing unrestricted access to scholarly research and literature. It promotes the free availability and unrestricted use of research outputs, enabling researchers, students, and the general public to access, read, download, and distribute scholarly articles without financial or legal barriers. In this response, I will provide you with an overview of the history and latest resolutions related to Open Access Policy.
Introduction: Physical activity is a natural need of every human being, brings significant health benefits, and adapts the body to exertion. Lifestyle is based on conscious choices that affect health. Health-promoting activities such as regular physical activity, healthy and wholesome meals, adequate recovery, and stress reduction in daily life minimize the risk of future behavior. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the Physical Activity (PA) and lifestyle of female students of the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at the Tarnow Universit...y of Applied Sciences surveyed in February and March 2023. Among other things, the time, frequency, and places of physical activity were investigated, and did the physical activity and lifestyle of female students differ according to the field of study undertaken and between first- and fourth-year physiotherapy students? Methods: The survey was conducted among 167 female students of physiotherapy, physical education, nursing, and cosmetology at the FHS. Using a diagnostic survey, a questionnaire survey was conducted, the research tool was a survey questionnaire of our design, which included questions on physical activity, lifestyle, and sociodemographic data. Results: The results indicate that the female students led active and healthy lifestyles. The vast majority, more than 90%, of the female students surveyed were aware of how physical fitness and their health-promoting activities, as well as knowledge related to these issues, would be important in their future profession. Regarding the field of study and the physical activity undertaken, a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) was shown, it was the female students from physical education who were the most active among all women. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the chosen field of study influences the declared health-promoting behavior of female students and that the physical activity undertaken and the healthy lifestyle are related to the choice of future profession, while the field of study and the year of the study did not differentiate the lifestyle of female students.
