Biography

Leszek Piotr Jurdziak, DSc, PhD, Eng is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Geoengineering, Mining and Geology at Wrocław University of Science and Technology (PWr), Poland. He also currently heads the Department of Mining within the same faculty.

Born in the late 1950s-to-60s, Dr. Jurdziak holds dual degrees: an MSc in Applied Mathematics (1982) and a second MSc in Mining Engineering (1988), both from PWr. His academic career is distinguished by a robust foundation in stochastic and numerical modeling, which he applies to mining engineering challenges.

Dr. Jurdziak’s research interests encompass the application of mathematical and computer-based methods in mining, including simulation, risk assessment, equipment reliability, and economic evaluations of machinery and transport systems. His scholarly work has been published widely: he has contributed to high-impact journals such as Fuel, Physicochemical Problems of Mineral Processing, and Springer‑published conference series.

Formerly the head of the Industrial and Geo‑Economics Division and a coordinator for the MSc programme in Mining and Power Engineering at PWr, his leadership extends beyond departmental roles—he has taught at the Polish‑American School of Business at Cracow University of Technology. Presently, he leverages his expertise in optimization and geoeconomics to guide departmental initiatives and mentor research.

With over 200 publications, nearly 2,400 citations, and an active role in academic management, Dr. Jurdziak is a leading figure in bridging advanced quantitative methods with practical mining solutions

Research Interest

Dr. Leszek Jurdziak’s research bridges advanced quantitative modeling with real-world mining applications. His primary interests include the application of stochastic methods, simulation techniques, and optimization algorithms in mining engineering. He specializes in evaluating the reliability, productivity, and cost-efficiency of mining equipment and conveyor transport systems. Dr. Jurdziak also explores risk assessment and decision-support systems for mine planning, logistics, and resource allocation. A significant focus of his work lies in modeling economic performance indicators in mining operations using mathematical and statistical tools. Additionally, he investigates environmental and energy efficiency in mineral processing and transport systems. His interdisciplinary approach integrates geoengineering, economics, and data analytics to improve operational efficiency and sustainability in the mining sector. Through applied research and collaboration with industry, Dr. Jurdziak contributes to the development of intelligent mining systems and innovative methodologies for assessing technical and economic feasibility in extractive industries.

Assessment of Thermal Uniformity of Heating Plates Using a Thermal Imaging Camera

This study presents an assessment of the thermal uniformity of heating plates in vulcanizing presses used for splicing conveyor belts. A malfunctioning press can result in defective splices, potentially causing interruptions in material transport and leading to significant production losses. The research involved an analysis of temperature distribution on the surface of the heating plates—two in a lab and two in industrial settings using a thermal imaging camera. The results revealed considerable non-uniformity in both the heating rate an...d the steady-state temperature – with temperature differences reaching up to 40 °C within a single heating plate. Such deviations may lead to uneven vulcanization and reduced quality of the resulting belt joints, highlighting the importance of regular diagnostics of the presses.

Dimensioning of Splices Using the Magnetic System

The proper geometry of belt splices influences their subsequent performance and durability during operation. Despite being such a critical aspect, evaluating the geometry of splices can be challenging, especially after their fabrication and vulcanization. This article presents an approach to diagnosing the geometry of belt splices based on the examination of belts using the DiagBelt+ magnetic system.
